I can't put my finger on it. Maybe the distrust is rooted in the years of being lied to by the Democrat Party. I'm just throwing out a wild guess here. I jest.
But, the reason Trump won on illegal immigration is obvious. He properly framed it for exactly what it is - a foreign invasion. Commenters who voted for Trump confirm this.

The Democrat Party is cluelessness incarnate. They have the very unpopular Walz doing fake town halls. They refuse to see that their policies and positions are directly at odds with voters, but think if they change their messaging approach voters will change their minds. Spoiler: they won’t.
