On Sunday’s “Face the Nation” on CBS, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum explained that his view of the Trayvon Martin shooting differed significantly from the one held by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
Gingrich was critical of President Barack Obama’s reaction, but Santorum placed the blame on accused shooter George Zimmerman’s mental state.
“Well, you know, obviously, I’m not privy to what’s going on in someone’s mind,” Santorum said. “Obviously, in my opinion, someone … has a very sick mind who would pursue someone like this. This is clearly a heinous act. You know, there are a lot of people who have a lot of distorted views of reality. It’s a tragic, tragic case. And my heart goes out to the parents, too. I can’t imagine what they’re suffering, losing their son in such a horrific way. All I would say is that, whatever the motive is, it was a malicious one, and a very, very tragic one.”
Earlier, an eyewitness reported that George Zimmerman, on whose head the New Black Panthers have placed a $10k bounty, acted in self defense after he was assaulted by Trayvon Martin. Spike Lee and other race-baiters have aided in spreading the call for vigilante justice. Wiser heads have established a Twitter hashtag, #TeamDueProcess, in order to counter the lynch mob.
This may be the misjudgment that sticks the fork in Rick Santorum’s candidacy. Go over there and take in the video, if you can stand it.
Jesse Jackson called Trayvon Martin a ‘martyr’ at a church service in Eatonville, FL this morning. Michael Pfleger demanded ‘justice’ in the case. The NAACP has organized a caravan to Florida from South Carolina to join in protests.
Those who have cried most loudly for the blood of George Zimmerman have been silent about the case of the student in Florida burned, apparently by schoolmates, for the crime of being white.
