Creator of The Daily Show misstates GOP position on birth control

Wasting no time to score political points in the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn., massacre, comedienne/producer Lizz Winstead asserts that Republicans support easy access to guns but want to restrict access to birth control.

We suppose this view is common in Hollywood and Manhattan and among young liberals throughout the country. Is there any truth to it?

Many Republicans oppose government-mandated insurance benefits. Such mandates increase the price of health insurance. An increase in the price of health insurance reduces the number of employers and individuals who can afford to purchase coverage. Most people regard an increase in the number of people who are uninsured as a bad thing.

We are not aware of a single Republican Governor or member of Congress who thinks access to birth control should be restricted by the government.

Reasonable people can disagree about the proper role of government in the design of health insurance benefits, but distorting the GOP position on the issue is a cheap shot.
