Mayer was employee number 20 at Google. During her 13 years at the company, she held key roles in Google Search, Google Images, Google Books, Google Product Search, Google Toolbar, iGoogle, Google News and Gmail, according to Wikipedia.
She is widely respected in Silicon Valley and, it seems, on Twitter:
Marissa Mayer has done more to make Yahoo relevant again in the past 15 minutes than anyone else has in the past 5 years.

NYT reports @marissamayer will be Yahoo's next CEO: http://t.co/jEHWzcMZ Marissa works harder than anyone I've ever met + she's whip-smart.

Marissa Mayer, nouvelle superwoman de Yahoo ? http://t.co/XypFU4sc via @Challenges

Fifteen years ago Yahoo was cutting-edge company. It, along with Netscape, Ebay, and America Online, was a darling of stock-market speculators. Today, Yahoo continues to rack up tons of page views, but is clearly overshadowed by Apple, Amazon.com, and Google, as well as newer social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Facebook, in particular, seems to be a major threat given its ability to target display ads with surgical precision — something Yahoo cannot yet do.
Mayer — the fifth Yahoo CEO in five years — clearly has her work cut out for her:
Marissa Mayer is the new CEO of Yahoo. I still used Google to find out who she is.

Yahoo gave up on search, missed out on social and mobile, and can't define what it is. Can it be fixed? http://t.co/VX9SOGRe

Yahoo is a problem too big even for Marissa Mayer http://t.co/MsXnfHKE

Some might think it would be difficult to be both a good mom and a good CEO, given the intense demands of both jobs (especially if the mom doesn’t hire a nanny). Twitter users, however, think those concerns are antiquated:
It is high time the business world recognized that pregnancy is part of life and not a roadblock. Good for #yahoo http://t.co/pZGq8SAz

wow – amazing female role model @marissamayer is the new Yahoo! ceo AND is pregnant…

Yes, world, women can run companies & be pregnant at the same time. http://t.co/QynzqQXg #fem2

Props to @marissamayer for taking on ceo gig while pregnant! I ran a (much smaller) company while pregnant with twins. It can be done

On that note, this Twitter user makes a good point:
Mayer is auditioning for the role of Superwoman – giving birth whilst single-handedly saving Yahoo!. Least she'll deliver on one of those 🙂
