We know what a woman at senior center meant when she shouted “Fight the Power!” during a President Barack Obama campaign speech tonight in Florida. The 1989 rap song by the hip hop group Public Enemy alludes to black culture, the civil rights movement, and the music of James Brown.
The lyrics to the rap include the following pleasantries:
Elvis was a hero to most
But he never meant —- to me you see
Straight up racist that sucker was
Simple and plain
Mother—- him and John Wayne
Cause I’m Black and I’m proud
I’m ready and hyped plus I’m amped
But that’s now how Twitter users took it. Snark ensued:
Oh, the irony of someone yelling "Fight the Power" at an Obama speech…so much #headdesk.
