TIME's cover story is about John Fetterman '[coming] out of the darkness,' but has he really?

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman has not had a great year. Yeah, he did win his election last November (Mehmet Oz was just that terrible a Republican candidate), but that's literally all he's got going for him.

After suffering a massive stroke in spring of 2022, he was left physically and cognitively crippled. His wife is far more interested in the public spotlight than she is in caring for and protecting him — and that's majorly assuming that she has any interest whatsoever in caring for and protecting him. His team, who cannot possibly not realize how precarious his physical and mental health situations are, has shown no real effort to help him. The best they can do is cover for him, which does not help him at all. And our media are unwilling to acknowledge that what Fetterman really needs right now is to be the center of a medical professional's attention as opposed to the public's.

I don't particularly like John Fetterman. From what I know about him, he's got some major political baggage and he seems like he was a jerk of a mayor and a jerk of a lieutenant governor. But I still cringe when I see the media try to elevate him when he's so clearly broken. So you can understand why I find this cover story from TIME so grating and unhelpful:

The title of the story is "How John Fetterman Came Out of the Darkness." Except John Fetterman hasn't come out of the darkness. He is still very much in the darkness. Being in the media spotlight doesn't mean he's out of the darkness.

Just as Gisele Fetterman is using her husband to get famous and build her brand, the media are using John Fetterman to make them feel better about themselves. Look at how much we care about his welfare! Aren't we amazing and special?

But how caring and amazing and special are they really if they're so easily able to move past the fact that he was apparently at death's door on more than one occasion?

That's the first sentence/paragraph of Molly Ball's piece. The guy "nearly died" twice — at least twice — within a one-year period, and we're supposed to focus on where he's at now? Which, by the way, is not a good place? He still struggles to choke out a single sentence, still has difficulties with auditory processing, and is still physically and cognitively compromised. These are not attributes you look for in a U.S. Senator, or in any leader, for that matter.

That's actually a really fair and really important question. We know for a fact that the media have tried to cover up Fetterman's incoherence before. Who's to say that Ball or a TIME editor isn't trying to do the same thing but just taking care to leave in a few Fetterman-isms to avoid suspicion?

The more we learn about John Fetterman, the more reason there is to believe that he never should have seen his Senate campaign through to the election. He should have quit while his health was already far behind.

While TIME's cover story on John Fetterman may not be as fawn-y as we've seen from countless other outlets, it's nonetheless troubling to watch the media continue to work so hard to keep Fetterman front and center when that's the last thing he needs right now.
