Nina Turner may not seem like the sharpest tool in the drawer, but that's only because she isn't.
Seriously, the progressive former Ohio State Senator and current Senior Fellow at the Institute for Race, Power, and Policy has a rather impressive track record of very bad takes (although, to be fair, she occasionally stumbles into a good one).
And today, she offered up another bad take. This particular one had to do with the U.S. economy. In case you missed it, the rate of inflation slowed last month:
BREAKING: Inflation tumbled to 3% in June, marking a 12th consecutive month of declines. https://t.co/u8F7RePgYa

But consumer prices just aren't coming down:
More than two years into the current bout of inflation, the debate over its causes and the potential duration are ongoing — as well as the questions about how long it will take for monetary policy to rein it in.
“Neither consumers nor the Federal Reserve are popping the champagne just yet,” Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate, said in a note Monday, adding: “Americans have put the worst of inflation behind, but the war hasn’t yet been won.”
For what it's worth, Nina Turner is quite certain as to what the problem is:
It’s called CORPORATE GREED! pic.twitter.com/fsGM7yawpY
— Nina Turner (@ninaturner) July 12, 2023
IS THAT WHAT IT'S CALLED, NINA?
“Inflation is down, but why aren’t prices falling?!”
— Nina Turner (@ninaturner) July 12, 2023
Because companies make more money when they raise prices.
That seems like ... not the correct explanation.
I’m just here for the ratio. 😂
— Bacon🥓 (@BaconPhoenix61) July 12, 2023
Good. Then you'll really enjoy the responses Nina's been getting.
— Damin Toell (@damintoell) July 12, 2023
Heh.
Yeah, there’s totally no other factor. None at all lmao https://t.co/BszuIGGFgK
— Dr. Alixavier Cherry (@blackchariz) July 12, 2023
Sigh.
It’s a lot more complicated that you portray it to be Nina
— Matisyahu (@Revenge_of_Khan) July 12, 2023
Although it's not really that complicated.
“Inflation is down, but why aren’t prices falling?!”
— stevemur (@stevemur) July 12, 2023
For the same reason that a reduction in the rate of spending increase isn’t a “spending cut.” It’s simply a slowdown in the rate of increase. Inflation would need to go negative to imply broad price cuts.
Because prices falling would be deflation not a lower rate of inflation.
— Jacob Bloom (@JacobBloom31) July 12, 2023
(Inflation is not down)
— Andrew Wagner (@andrewwagner) July 12, 2023
The rate of increase is down Professor Turner, but prices are still increasing, just at a slower rate.
— Max Murray (@MaxMurrayTweets) July 12, 2023
It didn’t decrease, it just increased by a lesser amount .
— Rob Parker (@robdubparker) July 12, 2023
Inflation isn’t down, genius. The rate at which it continues to go up is falling. Supposedly.
— SoothingDave (@SoothingDave) July 12, 2023
Supposedly Nina Turner knows things, but the rate at which evidence emerges to support that is increasingly negative.
Bless your heart; doesn’t know the difference between lower inflation and negative inflation
— Walton (@WaltonBuzzGT) July 12, 2023
Very surprised that you don't understand inflation.
— Damin Toell (@damintoell) July 12, 2023
Narrator: Damin was, in fact, not surprised.
Still convinced she's a parody account.
— Kaya Nakata (@kaya_nakata) July 12, 2023
I refuse to believe anyone is this out of it.
Nina is! And she's damn proud of it, too.
This is embarrassing, aren’t you embarrassed https://t.co/nPX04MAKjK
— Hadeeł (@TheRonSwanson93) July 12, 2023
Clearly not. Otherwise she wouldn't keep doing this kind of stuff.
Tell me you don’t understand economics without telling me you don’t understand economics. https://t.co/MdsGyzJyPV
— LONΞRGAN 🥃 (@gender_cult) July 12, 2023
It's OK, Nina. You don't have to tell us. We know. Good Lord, do we know.
On today's episode of the economically illiterate
— Gustave de Molinari (Nathan Cline) (@NathanMCline74) July 12, 2023
I still don't understand economics. -Nina Turner
— CodyDubz (@AdolphClitler) July 12, 2023
Take an economics class please.
— Ezra Haze (@EzraHaze) July 12, 2023
And if you're too short on time to do that, Nina:
Please! Just read 1 chapter. pic.twitter.com/CgpNJpCMsm
— Nathan Simons (@simonsnathank) July 12, 2023
It's only one chapter, Nina.
