We learned a lot of lessons from the COVID pandemic. And maybe one of the most important lessons of them was not only that the World Health Organization is an utterly useless entity rife with corruption, but that it also has the potential to do infinitely more harm than good.
Of course, anyone who’s criticized the WHO over the past several years is usually met by liberals and Democrats with accusations of not caring about world health and not caring if people die. Only a coldhearted monster could oppose something called the World Health Organization!
Except despite what the WHO’s defenders will tell you, the WHO actually is just a dumpster fire of awfulness. And it’s not as though we needed further evidence to support that assertion, but the WHO done gone ahead and given us some anyway:
BREAKING: North Korea, a regime that starves its own people, was just elected to the @WHO Executive Board. No joke: https://t.co/cBmNO6AmvJ pic.twitter.com/661rILwqEY

This is indeed no joke. At least not the funny kind:
North Korea has a Ministry of Public Health? WHO knew?
According to the WHO, “the Executive Board is composed of 34 persons who are technically qualified in the field of health, each designated by a Member State that has been elected to serve by the World Health Assembly. Member States are elected for three-year terms.” So North Korea’s representative is “technically qualified in the field of health.” So North Korea gets at least three years on the World Health Organization’s Executive Board.
There’s insane, there’s bats**t insane, and then there’s whatever the hell this is.
2/ What this means is that one of the world's most horrific regimes is now a part of a group that sets and enforces the standards and norms for the global governance of health care. It is an absurd episode for a key U.N. agency that is in much need of self-reflection and reform.

The entire U.N. is in much need of self-reflection and reform. It’s just hot garbage all the way down.
3/ North Korea's regime allows its people to die of starvation while they spend billions on nuclear weapons.
As a member of the WHO Executive Board for the next three year, Kim Jong Un will help set the agency's agenda and implement its policies.https://t.co/OExMC1X2kL

4/ North Korea was elected, in a slate with the other nominees, by a secret ballot: 123 nations voting yes, 13 abstentions and 6 spoiled ballots; 35 countries were absent. Normally the elections are by consensus, but Russia challenged Ukraine's nomination, and so a vote was held.

5/ The right signal from the U.N. to the North Korean regime would be an overdue referral to the International Criminal Court, not an election to an organization that sets the standards for global health.
— Hillel Neuer (@HillelNeuer) May 31, 2023
Well, it’s important to remember that back in 2017, the World Health Organization named Robert Mugabe as a “goodwill ambassador.” Robert Effing Mugabe, you guys. The U.N. really likes homicidal dictators, don’t they?
6/ The truth is that scores of North Korean regime actors, from Kim Jong-un to low-level guards, should be investigated and prosecuted for committing some of the most heinous crimes against humanity ever documented in modern times. This is what the U.N. should be advancing.

7/ North Korea defends election to WHO leadership role, says it “will contribute to the noble work of the WHO and its mission for the promotion of the health and well-being of all people across the world, as well as the successful functioning of both of the executive board and… pic.twitter.com/Mti4C2M1FC

Here’s the full version of Hillel Neuer’s tweet:
Good on the U.S. for at least pushing back on this one.
8/ As a member of the Executive Board, the regime of North Korea will for the next three years share power in deciding the fate of regional directors, as recently happened in March when a director was accused of racism, harassment, and bullying of staff.https://t.co/4Tq5xAZJkV

9/ Given the prominence of the Executive Board to the workings of the World Health Organization and its influence on health internationally, the election of DPRK (North Korea) to the WHO Executive Board is arguably a threat to everything WHO is supposed to represent.
— Hillel Neuer (@HillelNeuer) June 2, 2023
The WHO itself is a threat to everything the WHO is supposed to represent.
WTAF?

@HillelNeuer Wow, seems like the WHO's definition of health is as flexible as North Korea's definition of human rights.

Clearly.

Update:
This is … not a great look:
This ridiculous clown is now congratulating one of the worst dictators in the world for North Korea getting an undeserved seat on the executive board of the worthless and incompetent WHO. pic.twitter.com/8undasJ9ck

Disgusting.
