In case you missed it, the first of about 54 sequels to James Cameron’s “Avatar” recently came out in theaters. But if you’re thinking of checking it out for some reason, i.e. boredom or just being a glutton for punishment, there’s something you should know before you drop the $20 for a ticket.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is highly problematic.
But don’t take our word for it; take Kathia Woods’. Woods is a Pennsylvania-based “Freelance Film/tv critics/ Entertainment Journalist/Moderator/Public Speaker,” and apparently it’s part of her many jobs to call out cultural appropriation whenever she sees it. And apparently she sees it in a movie about a civilization that isn’t even human:

And when Kathia says “we gotta talk about” this stuff, she means that she’s willing to talk about it with people she follows:
How stunning. How brave.
Oh well. Unfortunately for Kathia, while she can stop people from responding directly to her, she can’t stop anyone from having opinions on how stupid her tweet is.
Congratulations Zoe Saldana for being declared White. https://t.co/aedsJ3h7aa

That’s the least of Kathia’s problems. She has so much more to be embarrassed about.
it's true. it's disgusting james cameron didn't cast any actual na'vi actors in a movie about the na'vi. https://t.co/6ZxlXxO9mS

Snort.
We’ve seen some woke busybodies beclown themselves over “cultural appropriation” stuff plenty of times. But over cultural appropriation across species, where one of the species doesn’t even exist? That’s pretty out-there.
Woman says that fictional alien species are basically black people and then proceeds to call everyone else racist. https://t.co/TDqE5duCI9

We don’t blame you for having a headache.
*sees a movie where the heroes live in trees, wear loincloths, and fight with sticks*
the woke: "um excuse me, SIR, those are MY people and i don't see that reflected in your casting choices. how very dare you."
— T. Becket Adams (@BecketAdams) December 19, 2022
When you're so woke you start grouping made up aliens in with actual people of color.
Like this is so offensive, what the heck. https://t.co/ONZOno61KC

Could it be that Kathia Woods is the actual racist here?
These are not human beings these are aliens. Is this person saying that in sci fi movies aliens must be played by POC? Cause that kinda implies POC are not human beings. https://t.co/3BkrwRQMkW

These actors are cosplaying as giant blue aliens. If you see this image and immediately think they're "cosplaying as poc," you might be the one who's a racist. https://t.co/thTxeMS0L4

It’s not cultural appropriation, they are blue monkey people.
If you look at them and see black people…you might be racist. https://t.co/yLO2e7E5W9 pic.twitter.com/Vw1q9D3mhS
