Last week was a bit on the insane side, which means that some otherwise-significant stories unfortunately got pushed to the back burner.
But we’re bringing this to you now, because it’s still legitimately insane nearly a week later.
Some state governments have taken action against mask mandates in schools, which sounds like something that might be in-line with the ACLU’s ostensible whole “civil liberties” philosophy. But evidently the ACLU disagrees:
BREAKING: We’re suing to end South Carolina’s ban on mask requirements in schools, with Disability Rights South Carolina, Able South Carolina, and parents.
Students with disabilities are effectively being excluded from public schools because of this ban.
Courts must intervene.

“Courts must intervene.”

This is a disability rights issue.
Prohibiting schools from taking reasonable action to protect the health of their students forces the parents of children with disabilities to make an impossible choice: their child’s education, or their health.
— ACLU (@ACLU) August 24, 2021
Under federal disability rights laws, public schools cannot exclude, deny access, or segregate students with disabilities from a public school education.
Banning mask mandates during a global pandemic does just that.
— ACLU (@ACLU) August 24, 2021
Schools are obligated to give ALL students an equal opportunity to benefit from public education.
Refusing to follow public health guidelines disproportionately endangers students with health conditions that make them vulnerable to COVID.
— ACLU (@ACLU) August 24, 2021
The CDC and public health experts agree: Masking prevents the spread of COVID-19.
South Carolina has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, and children under 12 still can’t get vaccinated.
State politicians cannot override federal disability rights laws.

Is there a law preventing people from masking if they choose to? We’re not aware of any. We’re guessing the ACLU isn’t aware of any.
If we didn’t know any better, we might start to think that the ACLU doesn’t actually give a damn about civil liberties after all.

How far as the American Civil Liberties Union fallen? It is now suing the government to force the government to force its citizens to do something against their own will

In a parallel world, one could imagine the ACLU suing schools to prevent them from requiring students to be masked… https://t.co/UAgY2nDqYB

Right?
The disabled students are free to wear a mask though?
— Jay (@OneFineJay) August 24, 2021
Nobody is banned from wearing a mask
SC is just respecting parents freedom to choose what's best for their children
If you believe putting a t-shirt scrap over your kid's face will provide a magical barrier from a disease that *already isn't deadly to them,* knock yourself out

Once upon a time, ‘CL’ stood for ‘Civil Liberties’.

Guess the ‘C’ stands for ‘Commie’.
