The Biden administration really does seem to be committed to undoing every good thing that happened while Donald Trump was president.
So why should their approach to the U.N. not follow the same pattern?
This morning, Secretary of State Tony Blinken had this to say about America’s relationship with the U.N. Human Rights Council:
The @UN Human Rights Council is flawed and needs reform, but walking away won’t fix it. The best way to improve the Council, so it can achieve its potential, is through robust and principled U.S. leadership. Under @POTUS Biden, we are reengaging and ready to lead.

Great take, Mr. Secretary! Except, of course, for the part that sucks. Which is the entire thing.

So that was actually a terrible take.
FLAWED?! My relationship with Nutella is flawed, the UNHRC is broken. https://t.co/4RZVx1gycz

Beyond broken.
We have literally no good reason to re-engage with oppressive, genocidal regimes. We have literally no good reason to re-engage with anti-Semites and terrorist apologists.
A thesis disproved by two successive administrations. China was elected to the Council while perpetrating a genocide. The Council hands over names of Chinese dissidents to the CCP. The Council is systemically anti-Semitic. Congress needs to assert its oversight prerogative. https://t.co/h8rN9SDppN

Completely wrong. The UNHRC includes the worst human rights abusers in the world and spends all of its time simply attacking one country. There is nothing you can do to reform it under the current structure and participating just gives it undeserved credibility. https://t.co/ENQGqfBumb

We've seen this dumb movie before.
SecState Hillary Clinton, 3/09 upon re-joining the Council: "We will engage in the work of improving the UN human rights system"
2011: We "make a difference by working w/ you on the inside rather than standing on the outside merely as a critic" https://t.co/8eRmxvbMOr— Noah Pollak (@NoahPollak) February 8, 2021
Flawed…
It's mostly populated by the world's worst human rights abusers. It's a joke, as is most of the UN. https://t.co/fHWswkWNZW— Sp.D.–Doctorate of Shit Posting (@cheapoldbstd) February 8, 2021
Lmfaoooooooo…. You are going to be an even bigger bitch in the UN than Powers was… "Lead" hahahahaha
Can't wait to watch you bow to commies and mullahs https://t.co/UJemy92Hmw

The worst human rights abusers in the world are on the UNHRC. That’s not flawed, that’s rotten to the core. https://t.co/Vyx7Ui8EfO

The UNHRC is a sick joke. I fail to see how lending it any legitimacy will make anything better. https://t.co/NKMH7T03ia

Walking away from the U.N. Human Rights Council may not persuade human rights abusers to stop abusing human rights, but it would certainly send a very loud and clear message that the United States doesn’t engage with or support human rights abuse.
