Earlier today, journalist Jim Roberts tweeted about some of the men who have been arrested in the wake of last week’s storming of the U.S. Capitol:
CAPITOL RIOTS ARREST UPDATE:
*William Watson of Auburn, Ala., was taken into federal custody on Monday.
*Authorities say Watson, 23, violated his bond on a July 2 drug case when he traveled to DC to join mob that stormed the Capitol.https://t.co/MkcINa1CVD pic.twitter.com/PTviopncLS— Jim Roberts (@nycjim) January 12, 2021
Roberts seemed particularly struck by former Air Force Lt. Col. Larry Brock:
*Larry Brock, the Texas man seen with zip-tie handcuffs on the Senate floor, makes 1st court appearance after his arrest.
*He provided financial documents to secure a public defender.
*So U.S. taxpayers will fund his defense for attacking the U.S.https://t.co/Csq8G50eFh pic.twitter.com/VpUQTwHxrZ— Jim Roberts (@nycjim) January 12, 2021
The thought of taxpayers funding the legal defense of someone like Larry Brock is indeed decidedly nauseating. It is also, however, the way this sort of thing works. It’s actually the way it’s worked for a while. At least in this country.

C’mon Mr. Roberts – it is an essential part of our justice system that every person have access to an attorney. It’s a good, fair, and right thing. If Brock is indigent, I’m glad his rights are being protected. That way, if he’s convicted, we can make sure it’s righteous.

That *is* why we have public defense. I’m infuriated by what these people did, but very proud that our country guarantees everyone a defense attorney. Safeguards are good.

The 6th amendment protects the right of an accused to have assistance of counsel. It applies to murderers, rioters, and everyone else that stands accused of a criminal act. Not really noteworthy regardless what we think of his alleged crime. https://t.co/V8bDofw3JA

US taxpayers defend murderers, terror suspect and pedophiles. It's the cost of justice. https://t.co/S6cTjDbs7x

And it’s one a lot of people are willing to pay, because you never know when you’ll need someone to defend you.
That's what public defenders are for. We must support due process and fair criminal procedure for even heinous criminals or we jeopardize justice for all.
