The optics of Nancy Pelosi standing in her fancy kitchen in front of her fancy $20,000-plus fridge/freezer combos stocked with expensive gourmet ice cream were awful enough on their own.
But some of the takes defending her over it have been arguably worse.
Like this one, for example, from Virginia Tech medieval studies professor and Department of Religion and Culture chair Matt Gabriele:
It’s a bit shocking to me that so many journalists who care so much about the white working class think that having 2 fridges is weird

What … what even … ?

Defending the double Sub Zero setup as working class is the hilarity I look for on Twitter these days…awesome.

Kinda makes sense that the sort of person who would defend Nancy Pelosi’s Marie-Antoinette-iness would also have to be woefully out of touch.
We're a middle class family with two fridges because of allergies. We also have separate pans and utensils. Our fridges cost $1,000 and $1,200. $24,000 is a car.

It’s incredible. He genuinely doesn’t understand the difference between having two generic fridges (common) and showing off 2 fridges worth $24,000 stuffed with hundreds of dollars worth of ice cream in the middle of a pandemic.

It’s about having $20k+ refrigerators and the fact she is blocking funding while showing off ice cream which is $13 a pint. People are starving out there waiting for money and she gloating.

The number of fridges wasn’t the thing, but go ahead and be shocked. It’s okay to acknowledge that people you like also do problematic things. It feels disingenuous that be “with the people” while also owning two refrigerators that are more expensive than my yearly income.

All fridge/freezer combos are not created equal.
Only a professor could be more out of touch than a journo or politician
