Socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hate it when they’re asked how they’re planning to pay for all their brilliant ideas. Mainly because they never have a convincing answer to that question.
But AOC thinks she’s found one at last, thanks to this hot New York Times scoop:
Last year, for the first time on record, the 400 wealthiest Americans paid a lower total tax rate than any other income group. https://t.co/i9thIFaCRJ
— David Leonhardt (@DLeonhardt) October 6, 2019
That’s good enough for AOC!
Hey everyone, I think I figured out how we’re going to pay for it ⬇️ https://t.co/zhKcUFdqYW
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 7, 2019
It’s all so simple!
I realize you're not very bright (and that was cemented when I heard you in Boulder) but the top 1% pay more income tax than bottom 90%. NYTimes article is wildly misleading.
— Ross Kaminsky (@Rossputin) October 7, 2019
So you understand, the underhanded effort here is to try to make people think the 400 wealthiest Americans paid a lower AMOUNT of taxes than any other group.
The fact is the top 1% paid over 37% of all income taxes. https://t.co/qrGDbnezYa https://t.co/XME4kjGdtJ

The other thing is this combines federal, state, and local taxtes and apparently does not only include income taxes. It's hard to say because the Times piece is super-sloppy and nebulous in its operational definitions.
But property, gasoline, etc. taxes are flat rates, so yeah. https://t.co/XME4kjGdtJ

Super-sloppy reporting isn’t a problem for AOC. Not when she’s got a super-sloppy agenda to push.

Math is hard!

You're still a couple trillion short math major.
— Scott Atkins ? (@ScottFantasy) October 7, 2019
You're going to raise $93 trillion from 400 people? The combined net worth of the 400 richest Americans is $2.7 trillion.
Where do you plan to get the other $90.3 trillion? https://t.co/vlgpFVhEmO
— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) October 7, 2019
Psh! You people are just getting hung up on the deati
(I love how GOP pundits are already saying “it’s not enough to pay for it!” even though “it” isn’t even defined in the tweet ?
It’s almost as if regardless of the circumstance, the GOP take is: “Whatever you’re talking about, don’t tax the rich – no matter what!”)
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 7, 2019
It’s almost as if AOC doesn’t have a clue how economics work and can’t actually explain how taxing the wealthiest 400 Americans through the nose is going to pay for her undefined “it.”
And yet they still paid more in actual $$ than all other taxpayers combined. May the solution isn't more taxes, but less government spending? Just a thought.
