I know I've said this before, and I know it won't be the last time, but AR-15s are not "weapons of war" simply because they are not issued/used in the military.

No. "Assault rifle" is a technical term for describing a select-fire rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge. The category is defined by the Sturmgewehr-44 which translates to "storm" or "assault" rifle.

"Assault weapon" on the other hand is a political term with a number of different definitions depending on who is using it and when.
