Yesterday, the New York Times’ Maggie Haberman posed what she claimed was a serious question about Donald Trump’s “animals” remarks:
Seriously asking – what possible context is there that makes Trump's "they're animals" comment from yesterday more nuanced?
— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) May 17, 2018
She took quite a beating for that, and with good reason. So we’re honestly not sure what possessed her to come back for more — but that’s exactly what she did:
This is the same thing Trump has done since fall 2015. Issue mushy-edged statement that is meant to leave an impression. Waits for media reaction. Then screams he was taken out of context. Then half the media self-flagellates. How many times does this cycle have to get repeated? https://t.co/SNb3sMLhNE

Maybe the cycle keeps getting repeated because the media keeps effing up?
"When will this cycle of me running headfirst into a wall end?"
*runs headfirst into wall*

And then there’s this:
Most people if they were actually being taken out of context would find a different way of saying things after the first 100 times, particularly when they are president. So it’s a bit clever to do “boy the media botched this again!”

Look, Maggie: We get that you don’t like when Trump — or anyone — calls the media out on their B.S. But your taking offense to being called out doesn’t make it any less warranted.

Lemme get this straight. He needs to change the way he speaks so you can report accurately? *blinks* really? https://t.co/wXHU4Fpnxq

“I would like the man who has been speaking this way his entire adult life to change so that so I, a journalist, will stop botching my job.” – You, basically. This is just…stunningly audacious. https://t.co/AckS936joY

In the words of Michael Bolton, why should he change, you're the ones who suck.
— Joel (@Jamisen) May 18, 2018
The media did botch this. Period. "He made us do it because of things he says at other times" is absurd. Grow up and do your job. https://t.co/Sg6fdNtpUI

What a novel idea, right?
Weak statement. How about take some responsibility for reporting accurately?

Isn't your job to put words in context? https://t.co/jWkCliTiK3

Blaming him for her failures.

The media immediately latches onto and promotes any interpretation of Trump’s remarks which cast him in the most negative light. No attempt to seek clarification, just put out the most negative spin possible first, retract later if necessary. Damage done.

I’m loving this buffoonery. “Sure we’re ridiculous, but we don’t like him so it’s justified”
— Commissar Jamal (@JamalCommissar) May 18, 2018
because y'all DID botch it.
and you personally are still botching it. Admit the mistake and move on. Saying "it's not my fault!" when it was, just makes you look fake.
— Athena (@1trueathena) May 18, 2018
“Boy the media botched this again!” I completely agree…. wait, did I take you out of context? You need to be much clearer in the future
— Michael Testa (@michaeltesta) May 18, 2018
Heh.
They just keep lowering the bar for themselves. Didn't think it was possible at this point, but they're committed for sure.
