Desperate: Todd Akin tells Claire McCaskill to withdraw from U.S. Senate race

In the wake of this morning’s Rasmussen poll, which puts Democrat Claire McCaskill at 48 percent favorability over Todd Akin’s 38 percent, the Akin camp is trying a new approach to beating the incumbent. Unfortunately for Akin, it kinda sucks:

“The fact that Claire McCaskill is only polling at 48% after 72 hours of constant negative attacks on Todd Akin shows just how weak she is. If she can’t break fifty percent after a week like this, Democrats should ask Claire to step down. Todd is in this race to win; we will close this gap and win in November with the support of the grassroots in Missouri and across America.”

That’s the best Akin could come up with? C’mon. Claire McCaskill’s political career is certainly nitpick-worthy, but this is one instance where her Republican challenger is in no position to call her out.

If Akin truly wants the GOP to triumph in Missouri, a better strategy would be for him to withdraw and allow someone more deserving — and less prone to foot-in-mouth disease — to take his place.
