Newt Gingrich: " I hereby release all delegates bound or pledged to me under any and all state laws or party rules."

In non-Akin news, Newt Gingrich has penned an open letter to Republican National Convention delegates officially releasing them from any obligation to him. It’s unlikely that Newt still had too many people clinging to his presidential aspirations, but we guess he figured it’s better to be safe than sorry. Gingrich is urging all of them to unite under the Romney-Ryan banner. Um, OK. That’s nice of Newt and all, but is it really necessary?
Let's just remember no one can "release" delegates. They can do whatever they want.

Must be time to sing Kumbaya:
Goodnight moon. MT @AlexNBCNews Gingrich releases his delegates – "it is time now for all Republicans to come together"

In an open letter to all GOP delegates, Gingrich says its time to "come together in common purpose to defeat" Pres Obama & VP Biden.

Of course, the show of solidarity may not be bad for Gingrich, either:
Of course, the whole notion of "releasing" delegates is not clearly a necessary step. But the email may help bring in some bucks for Newt.

While Gingrich’s email may not be as ripe for a media frenzy as, ahem, other recent stories, it’s still good for a few jokes:

Newt Gingrich releases GOP delegates (he was probably keeping them in a zoo somewhere I guess)

Maybe they’ve been hanging out with the penguins and sleepy cheetahs.
