The embattled GOP senate candidate took to the airwaves today on the Mike Huckabee Radio Show to address his controversial statements on ‘legitimate rape’ and post-rape pregnancy.
RT @FixAaron: Akin: "I've really made a couple of serious mistakes here that were just wrong and that I need to apologize for."
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) August 20, 2012
Akin: "Rape is never legitimate…an evil act…I used the wrong words in the wrong way. I'm the dad of two daughters…"
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) August 20, 2012
Akin: "I also do know that people become pregnant from rape."
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Akin: "I've spoken in error"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Akin: "I was talking about forcible rape, and it was absolutely the wrong word"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Brutal listening to a candidate clarifying comments about forcible rape.
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) August 20, 2012
Akin: "I don't know that I'm the only person in public office who suffers from foot in mouth disease here"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Akin "this was a very serious error…but there were a lot of good people in Missouri who nominated me."
— Philip Klein (@philipaklein) August 20, 2012
So, will Akin withdraw from the U.S. Senate race in Missouri? It doesn’t sound like it:
Huckabee asks if Akin will drop out…he doesn't immediately say no…rambling a little
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) August 20, 2012
Akin: "I'm not a quitter"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Akin: "We all make mistakes"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Akin: "No one has called me and said 'Todd, I think you should drop out'"
— Ethan Klapper (@ethanklapper) August 20, 2012
Huckabee now asking about Akin's future campaign using the word "if." Akin sounds like he's staying in, but not defiant.
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) August 20, 2012
Akin on other Repubs calling on him to drop out: "Nobody wants to own your mistake."
— Philip Klein (@philipaklein) August 20, 2012
Akin interview with Huckabee now over. Don't think this will stop calls for him to withdraw.
— Philip Klein (@philipaklein) August 20, 2012
Klein is right: it’s unlikely that many Republicans will be satisfied with Akin’s apology. The number of calls on Akin to drop out, from the general public as well as from other GOP politicians, is increasing. Whether or not Akin will follow their advice remains to be seen.
