Race-Baiting Comments on Karmelo Anthony Fundraiser Reveal Society's Deep Sickness

I have a 19-year-old child and a 25-year-old son who wasn’t a teenager that long ago. As a teen, my son could be hot-headed, a trait not uncommon with an underdeveloped frontal lobe and surging testosterone—a volatile mix. At 6’3” with curly red hair and a Viking-like build from his Nordic heritage, he often attracted attention, including from other young men eager to prove themselves by challenging him. His grandfather and I had countless conversations with him about walking away and considering the lifelong consequences of a single bad decision.

This perspective helps me understand the tragic stabbing of Austin Metcalf by Karmelo Anthony. I suspect evidence will reveal an ongoing conflict between the two that escalated into an ugly, avoidable act of violence. It reminds me of an incident when my son was 18. He and a boy—let’s call him Dylan for privacy—clashed repeatedly. Dylan, whose family lived in our neighborhood, was a troublemaker, and his father wasn’t much better. By my son’s senior year, Dylan’s constant provocation pushed him to the edge. One day, an altercation nearly erupted in the school parking lot after school, where both boys, old enough to drive, faced off. Thankfully, teachers intervened, but the boys planned to settle things off school grounds the next day.

Fortunately, my daughter, who attended the same school, alerted me. I wasn’t worried about my son’s physical safety—I knew he could overpower Dylan, and Dylan likely knew it too. My real fear was weapons being involved because of that imbalance. Desperate, I called my son’s baseball coach, who was familiar with Dylan’s family, and pleaded for his help. The coach visited Dylan’s home and spoke bluntly to his father. He warned that my son, a strong athlete, could seriously injure Dylan, and if his father cared for his son, he’d tell him to back off. Whatever the coach said worked—Dylan stopped bothering my son, and the issue fizzled out.

I wish someone had intervened between Karmelo and Austin. Two young lives are now shattered, and a tragedy that could have been prevented has left lasting scars. With all that being said, there is no excuse for the remarks being left on a fundraiser for Karmelo Anthony. They are despicable and show how low our society has sunk.

This could have been any two teenage boys of any race. These kinds of disputes are playing out all over America today. Thankfully, cooler heads generally prevail. School employees or parents step in. Sometimes even girlfriends can keep boys under control. To make this racial is the height of depravity. A terrible event happened. One family lost their boy. He died in his twin brother's arms. That's tragic. His killer will likely spend time in jail and even if he doesn't, he will navigate trauma the rest of his life. There are no winners here.

All of these morons who are so sure that Karmelo Anthony was acting in self-defense. Do you know who isn’t so sure about it? Karmelo Anthony himself. His exact words to the police: “Can I claim self-defense?”
