Last night, Elissa Slotkin faced the unenviable task of delivering the Democratic rebuttal to a masterful speech by Trump. It was always going to be an uphill battle, but Trump’s performance was so strong that there was little to critique without coming across as an emotionless troll. To her credit, Slotkin made an effort to appear relatable and composed, even as the rest of her party struggled to clear that very low bar. One part of her speech was particularly compelling.
There was once a time when Democrats and Republicans largely shared the same core values, differing only in their approaches to certain social issues and taxation. Today, however, a vast chasm divides them.
It’s incredibly challenging for people with starkly opposing views to coexist peacefully when they disagree on fundamental issues like the role of parents in society, the sanctity of life, and the belief that all individuals are truly created equal and deserve an equal opportunity to succeed through hard work.
Democrats remained seated, unmoved, as a young cancer-fighting warrior was honored as an honorary Secret Service member. The head of the Secret Service—a man who risked his life to save Donald Trump—couldn’t hold back tears. Yet, Democrats wouldn’t even rise to their feet or applaud. That’s not just a difference of opinion; it’s a profound chasm in values.
When President Trump announced a wildlife sanctuary renamed to honor 12-year-old Jocelyn, a child brutally raped and murdered by gang members who crossed Biden’s open border, Democrats once again refused to stand. My 18-year-old daughter, a tiny, delicate sprite, still snuggles with me sometimes. That night, she joined me on the couch to watch the speech. As they showed Jocelyn’s mother, I held my daughter close, both of us weeping. I can’t fathom that mother’s grief, horror, and pain. Yet, once again, Democrats couldn’t see past their hatred to honor her or her lost child. That’s not normal behavior. Instead, it’s the behavior of hardened partisans who aren’t there to serve their constituents but exist solely to oppose Donald Trump. It’s a deplorable look.

They sat stone-faced as a 95-year-old mother was introduced, a woman who fought tirelessly to free her son from a Russian prison. Trump brought him home in just four weeks, while Biden did nothing during the four years of his imprisonment. She could have died with her son still locked away, but she never stopped fighting. Last night, she finally rejoiced—yet the Democrats couldn’t even muster a smile.
Yes, Slotkin’s right—the political parties of her parents’ time are dead. But she’s dead wrong on the culprit. Her side didn’t just lose its way—they abandoned it.
