Wading Into the Debate Over the Importance of Stay at Home Mothers

As my son and daughter have reached adulthood, we have had many conversations about preparing for their futures. One of those conversations revolved around gender roles in marriage and women working outside the home. I have been the main breadwinner for our family always. I had no other option. I was blessed to find work from home work 15 years ago when it was less popular plus I had very involved parents to help me with their grandchildren. I don't know how I would have managed otherwise. God was gracious. I told my son he should expect his wife to want to stay home with their children. I would have loved that option. I spent so many years stressed trying to do it all. You can't do it all well. That's just the facts. Perhaps, his wife may want to work. If so, I hope to be the supportive Mother in Law offering an alternative to child care. To my daughter, I've advised her to find a husband who values motherhood and who will provide for her joyfully. Media host, Alex Clark, shared her thoughts on the topic today.

Staying at home rearing children is certainly not easy. It is a different kind of hard. It is working for the benefit of your family rather than that of a corporation.

It certainly requires sacrifices for most families.

This is exactly why this conversation should happen shortly into dating. If a man has the idea his wife should work as many hours outside the home as him, he's probably not going to be a willing provider.

Indeed. It is also nice if a wife can earn extra money from home if needed, but that is not always feasible. With the right attitudes, budgeting, and a modest life, a mother being home with her children is very possible and should be celebrated. I'm heartened to see more young women making this choice. It shows this generation of mothers are prioritizing home and family. That can only benefit our country.
