We Are One Week Away from the First Caucus in Iowa and the Time to Temper Rhetoric Has Come

Deep breath! It is one week until the Iowa Republican Caucus. For those not aware, Iowa is not a regular primary. It is a Caucus. Basically, it is an exercise in persuading others to your side. Those who start off supporting Nikki Haley may eventually choose to move to Vivek if they see he is close to winning. If a group really despises one candidate, they may decide to support a candidate they despise just a bit less to ensure their most disliked candidate loses. It’s a bit like picking teams for kickball in grade school. All in all, it sounds stressful for a gal like me who was often chosen last.

After the day ends, I hope there can be a 'kumbaya' moment. It’s been a nasty primary. Lots of names have been called on Twitter (X). There has been some harmful doxing and ugly memes. It has served to do nothing but hurt feelings and divide the party even further. Unfortunately, that only benefits the Democrats. All of divisiveness has played right into the hands of the Democrats.

It has gotten so silly we are now disparaging the memory of Ronald Reagan, for goodness sake. That is when you know things have gotten beyond nonsensical.

Perhaps David is onto something. Maybe the money or the attention that comes with stirring up hate is too much to resist for some leaders on the right. It is important to consider carefully the motives of the voices you take seriously. Doesn't this seem like a time we could really use David's brother, Rush, again? I miss his measured takes, particularly when talking about friendly right leaning folks.

Mike Cernovich shared this tweet from President Trump from a full 10 years ago. It is a good reminder for our time. Whomever wins the Republican nomination is who we should deal with as Republicans. Allowing fear to take over our faith in right leaning leaders to guide us through perilous times is exactly the wrong response. We must pray for them and hold them accountable, but ultimately we have to support them. It's easy to sit in the corner and pout if your preferred candidate does not ultimately prevail. As a party, we have to be adults and unite to become one powerful force.

Indeed. Enjoy your Monday because next Monday will begin to shape the picture of who the final Republican nominee might be. There may be surprise or it may be Trump as polls seem to indicate. Whatever the outcome, the time has come to accept the will of Republican voters and recognize we are all on on side to beat the Democrats.
