California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a plan to phase out oil extraction in the state along with a ban on fracking by 2024:
NEW: California is now the first state to declare an end to oil extraction in the country.
Today, we're announcing that we will phase out all oil extraction — as part of a world-leading effort to achieve carbon neutrality — and ban fracking by 2024.

As for the oil extraction pledge, he plans that “no later than 2045”:
Newsom's office: "Governor Newsom requested that the California Air Resources Board analyze pathways to phase out oil extraction across the state by no later than 2045."

Billionaire Tom Steyer called banning fracking a “step in the right direction!”. . .
Banning fracking is a step in the right direction!
We need to accelerate our transition to the clean energy economy of the future. Actions, like @GovNewsom's ban, must be taken now. https://t.co/1pU8EQ5OsK

. . .but others don’t believe Newsom:
.@GavinNewsom – you promised pledged to ban fracking permits and did it anyways. Why should we believe you this time? https://t.co/7SFFmWs2Lo pic.twitter.com/Mu13kgkF5B

And the idea that oil drilling doesn’t end until 2045 isn’t sitting well with folks:
Phasing out oil drilling by 2045 is not good enough. https://t.co/I9aEHCAIZG

“2045 is too late,” they say:
Fracking accounts for just 2% of the oil production in CA. A fracking ban is cool, but way too little.@GavinNewsom is also asking the CA Air Resources Board to analyze how to end all oil extraction in the state by 2045. 2045 is too late. 2030 is more like it. https://t.co/6WTvPsqORC

And Greenpeace ripped him over it:
?1/ With no health and safety setbacks for communities, @GavinNewsom your announcement today means that more than 2 million Californians will suffer for almost 25 more years while oil and gas pollution continues. #NoDrillingWhereWereLiving https://t.co/DweWRO5inL

Exit question: Why not put wind turbines off the coast? Malibu would be a good place to start, don’t you think:
Why are California coastal waters still closed to offshore wind? https://t.co/tkyMY4jxKc
