As Twitchy told you yesterday, New York Times editorial board member Mara Gray took offense to Sen. Ted Cruz adding full context to a Frederick Douglass quote from one of his speeches that Colin Kaepernick shared on Twitter. The isolated quote was obviously intended as a slam on America (on the Fourth of July no less) but the full speech, from which Cruz shared many quotes, revealed something very different.
Next up to try and criticize Cruz for having the nerve to directly quote Frederick Douglass is New York City Councilman Justin Brannan:
Ted Cruz should not be "clarifying" Frederick Douglass.
— Justin Brannan (@JustinBrannan) July 5, 2019
That was teed up perfectly for Cruz to respond:
I know for NYC elected Dems words can lack “meaning,” but directly quoting at length is not “clarifying” (nor is linking to the entire brilliant speech). But selectively quoting Douglass to make him seem like a modern America-hating Leftist is, well, the opposite of “clarifying.” https://t.co/uUtcmU686v

It’s amazing those things have to be pointed out, but here we are. Meanwhile, Brannan’s tweet is getting ratio’d into the stratosphere:
Leave it to a low level democrat to appoint himself arbiter of who is allowed to say what.
— Hialeah Gringo (@hialeahgringo) July 6, 2019
Yes he should, especially when the quote in question was completely taken out of context and weaponized to further divide.

What is it with Lefties and picking utterly stupid beaches to die on rhetorically? https://t.co/dL1UgS3Hff

Colin Kaepernick shouldn’t be misrepresenting him. Then Ted woukdn’t have to say anything.

Yeah, all @tedcruz did was quote Frederick Douglass accurately.
If that's a problem, maybe talk to the person who quoted him out of context and made that necessary. https://t.co/u57hIOfspG
