Yesterday, Gawker posted a story that exposed a close working relationship between Politico White House correspondent Mike Allen and Philippe Reines, who served as an aide to Hillary Clinton while she was Secretary of State. Allen’s emails indicate that he was guaranteeing positive coverage of Chelsea Clinton.
CNN’s recently suspended Elise Labott appears to have had a similarly agreeable rapport with Reines, going so far as to comply with requests on what to tweet.
Politico’s Glenn Thrush sees nothing unusual there:
The Phillippe emails are intensely fascinating and revelatory to anybody who doesn't actually know him.

@GlennThrush what? You don't find obsequious behavior of journalists troubling? This is a serious question.
— susan price (@sbprice) November 25, 2015
Ass kissing for access isn't obsequious — it's cynical https://t.co/iFFZoB5Nqn

@GlennThrush Well, you know the players. From outside it looks troubling. Can you see that?

People hate media and will assume the worst. Most of this stuff is just everyday tradecraft — same BS as any job https://t.co/5KITk0c7zt

So, in other words…
Guys, we all let Hillary's staffers write tweets for us. Totes normal. Tradecraft. https://t.co/BViKz9fkO3
— Phil Kerpen (@kerpen) November 25, 2015
Yeah, that still just doesn’t seem right.
That MSM players regard taking their lead from USG/Dem officials as "everyday tradecraft" encapsulates the problem.https://t.co/aZns2WQ0Nz
— John Schindler (@20committee) November 25, 2015
@GlennThrush it's tradecraft to take orders from government officials about what stories to write?
— CommodoreBTC (@CommodoreBTC) November 25, 2015
That it's "everyday tradecraft" is exactly what people are pissed about. It confirms what we suspected/knew. https://t.co/UqlaobwYpF

Is this what @GlennThrush thinks his tradecraft is? Coordinating messaging / reporting with a political flack? pic.twitter.com/N0zc9LTOi6

Proving there is a cancer at heart of modern journalism.
He doesn't realize he is making point for us, does he? https://t.co/LaMHzEIj0U

@GlennThrush @sbprice What about @eliselabottcnn taking tweet directions from Hillary's minions? I assume that's everyday tradecraft too?
— Waldo (@AndyWIII) November 25, 2015
Promising "no-risk" interviews to prominent figures is standard trade craft. Got it. https://t.co/yF6Xaka6mI
