Poll: Very Few Americans Use So-Called 'Woke' Terminology

Twitter

It's funny. Some progressives are angry that the word "woke," which used to have a positive connotation, was culturally appropriated from black culture. But "woke" is very much a thing. I read a post here earlier about how the woke star of Disney's woke "Snow White" live-action remake was driving away more potential ticket sales with her big mouth.

I did a post earlier, where Gen. Mark Milley said he was scared that President Donald Trump would recall him to active duty just to court-martial him. This would supposedly be disastrous for morale among the rank-and-file. Milley's a bit sensitive about being called woke — in an exit interview with Jeffrey Goldberg before he retired, Milley told The Atlantic about accusations that the military had gone woke, "First of all, it’s all bulls**t. Second, these accusations are coming from people who don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re doing it for political purposes. Our military wasn’t woke 24 months ago, and now it’s woke?”

I did that post the same day that Libs of TikTok reported that the Navy had hired a non-binary drag queen as a “digital ambassador” to try to recruit people. And speaking of the Navy, how about their recommended reading list for sailors: Ibram X. Kendi’s critical race theory tome “How to Be an Antiracist"; "Sexual Minorities and Politics: An Introduction”; "Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women, and the Way Forward"; and "The New Jim Crow."

And remember when the Marines celebrated Pride Month with rainbow-colored rounds:

Semafor reports that, according to a poll, only one in five Americans or fewer use "woke" terminology.

Just 20% of adults said that they regularly used the term “safe space,” the most popular of the 30 terms tested last week, according to the poll shared first with Semafor. Fifty-six percent of adults said that they’d heard the term, but don’t regularly use it. Majorities said the same about the terms “white privilege” (64%), “trigger warnings” (55%), “gender non-binary” (54%), and “woke” itself.

Other terms were even less widely adopted. Just 5% said that they used “Latinx,” a term Democrats abandoned years ago but is often cited as a stand-in for unrelatable progressive language; a majority of adults said that they’d never even heard of “BIPOC,” a term for “Black, indigenous, and people of color” that progressives have used more widely over the last 10 years.

Check out the spread between Republicans and Democrats and use of terms like "safe space" and "misgendered."

Exactly. "White privilege"? "Patriarchy"? Right after the election, Joy Reid blamed white women for voting to maintain the patriarchy. Kamala Harris mocked Donald Trump for wanting to debate in his "safe space," Fox News. The Biden-Harris administration did try to make "Latinx" a thing but eventually gave up.

So I can believe the poll. There's real life, and then there's the bubble in which journalists and politicians live. Put academics in there as well and see what percentage use "woke" terminology.

Well said.
