Canadian media upset the NHL won't compel players to wear a Pride jersey

I wrote a VIP column about trying to avoid Pride Month as much as I could. I haven't been very successful. Today's the Drag Queen Story Hour at a park about a mile from my house. Every time I fire up a streaming service I get a list of "LGBTQ voices" to choose from. On my way to Starbucks — which is free of Pride paraphernalia — I pass a bookstore with a featured selection of Pride Month books. A video game site I frequent — because the other one got too political — has articles up about how you can celebrate Pride Month. They've run stories about how the character Gwen Stacey in "Across the Spider-Verse" is transgender.

I'm not a hockey fan, but I was proud of the NHL for staying out of it … until players began taking a knee, Colin Kaepernick-style. There was even talk about turning the blue lines black in honor of Black Lives Matter.

Now the media is upset because the NHL isn't compelling players to wear Pride jerseys on Pride Night.

Pride really is like a state religion at this point; as so many have pointed out, it's free speech to burn the American flag but hate speech to burn a Pride flag. Why would hockey players have to wear jerseys celebrating a sexual orientation? Why is there a whole month for celebrating a sexual orientation?
