A couple of weeks ago, a tweeter claimed that LGBTQ families were fleeing Florida for their f**kig lives, and if you didn’t believe it, “ask a gay.” Plenty pointed out that Florida was experiencing record population growth while states like California and New York were bleeding citizens.
Ari Drennen, who does LGBTQ news and media criticism for Media Matters for America, backs up that claim, saying she has friends who’ve fled the state, leaving behind family, friends, homes, and jobs, all because of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
It’s hard to have much patience for centrists who claim that DeSantis is not the existential threat that Trump is when I have friends who have had to flee their lifelong homes and leave behind friends, jobs, and elderly parents because of what he has done with power in Florida.

This seems overly dramatic but also par for the course here
— Richard Turgeon (@richardturgeon) May 20, 2023
It is literally a statement of fact.
— Ari Drennen (@AriDrennen) May 20, 2023
Like literally literally?
— Mike Greanwhel 🐰🐰🐰 (@freedomtrail69) May 20, 2023
It literally isn't. "Had to" makes it not so.
— Dixie Normis (@KneelB4Zodd) May 20, 2023
People are literally dying from it.
— James, the much lesser (@Jemimah314159) May 20, 2023
It’s literally not a statement of fact.

Dude no one is leaving Florida
— PhotographicFloridian (@JackLinFLL) May 20, 2023
What did he outlaw that they wanted to do. Read porn to children while twerking?
— Afewcrayonsshort (@afewcrayons) May 20, 2023
So you're saying that your friends were exposing kids to topics of a sexual nature? Time to find new friends.
— Joe McWopSki (@LakesFirearmsTr) May 20, 2023
You mean they HAD to leave Florida because of DeSantis' policies?
I'm sorry, but that doesn't sound credible to me.
— Hank (@HankRacette) May 20, 2023
Oh, calm down.
— @BlazingApathy (@BlazingApathy) May 20, 2023
Flee what, name it? Florida native, our state and governor are the best! So tell your liberal friends, thanks for leaving!
— Proud Father (@ProudFa45) May 20, 2023
What has he done that caused your friends to have to “flee their lifelong homes and leave behind friends, jobs, and elderly parents?”
— NCGM (@NCGM_4) May 20, 2023
What specifically is making them flee?
— Misschelle (@Misschelle2626) May 20, 2023
Did they have to flee in the dead of night. Staying in tolerant homes for safety in hidden rooms to avoid detection as they made their way to unoccupied states.

I never thought I’d use “hyperbolic drama queen” in a sentence but then you showed up.
— Surfing Cyberia (@surfingcyberia) May 20, 2023
This is a lie. If they are “fleeing” it’s due to their own paranoia not anything that has actually happened.
— Will T Treu (@treu_t) May 20, 2023
Voluntarily moving to a place that better matches your political beliefs ≠ “fleeing”.
No one is in danger. This isn’t the fall of Saigon, FFS.
— Michael Sleestak (@SleestakMack) May 20, 2023
Seriously, what it is precisely that they are “fleeing” from? Sure, you can decide voluntarily to move to another state that better aligns with your values, but fleeing? Literally, fleeing?
