ACLU decries discrimination against black hair

While Democrats like AOC and Ayanna Pressley are doing what they can to stoke race riots in New York City and across the country this weekend, the ACLU has turned its attention to black hair. Chris Rock got slapped by Will Smith at the Oscars for making a joke about his wife’s hair; Pressley and Jamaal Bowman deleted tweets praising Smith for assaulting Rock.

Last November, Michelle Obama revealed that she kept her hair straight as first lady because Americans “weren’t ready” for her natural hair. She did all that for us. (Her hair looked straightened the last time we saw her.)

The ACLU — we’ve forgotten what the letters used to stand for — is reminding us all that discriminating against black hair is discriminating against black people.

This is serious business. No, really; last year, the Biden administration noted its strong support for the Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2022, otherwise known as the CROWN Act.

The bill “would prohibit discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles that are commonly associated with a particular race or national origin, including locs, cornrows, braids, twists, Bantu knots, and Afros.” “The President believes that no person should be denied the ability to obtain a job, succeed in school or the workplace, secure housing, or otherwise exercise their rights based on a hair texture or hair style,” read a statement from the White House.

Sometimes the reverse is true: Look at Tennessee Three member Justin Pearson, who was busted as a “total fraud” who’d adopted an accent and grown an afro somewhere between student government and the Tennessee House:

We’re not sure if the CROWN Act passed, but we’re assuming it didn’t if the ACLU is still on the case.

Bonus to refinery29.com for finding a black trans girl to inform us about black women’s hair. It’s a trans rights issue as well.
