David French afraid parents' conspiracy theories are contributing to their children's anxiety

The New York Times’ newest conservative columnist, David French, has already made his opinion on Twitchy very clear after lifting up the rock we live under. So maybe French won’t see that we’re commending him for his choice of subject for his Sunday column. He’s worried about the increase in anxiety and even suicidal ideation among teenagers, and he’s right: we don’t talk about it enough. French argues that the problem is coming from inside the house — parents are the ones who need to heal themselves so they can heal their children.

French writes:

Just as there is a depressing familiarity to parents’ conversations about their children, there is a similar familiarity to kids’ conversations about their parents. I spend much of my time traveling to college campuses, both secular and religious, and I hear a similar refrain all the time: “Something happened to my parents.” Sometimes (especially at elite schools) they share stories about parents obsessed with their kids’ education. More often I hear about parents consumed by politics. And at the extreme end, I hear stories about the impact of conspiracy theories of all kinds. Just as parents are upset about their children’s anxiety and depression, children are anxious about their parents’ mental health.

We too hear about parents consumed by politics. Just the other day, President Joe Biden responded to a 4-year-old who wrote to him distressed about the gender wage gap … wonder where she got that? And back in 2019, adults in Canada pushed the #18to8 campaign to lower the voting age to 8 so that “climate change is on top of the ballot.” How many kids have anxiety because mom and dad aren’t driving an electric car yet?

Speaking of kids’ mental health, how many parents (and teachers) are filling kids’ minds with the idea they should be gender-fluid?

Parents who push their politics on their kids aren’t doing them any favors, but even the ones who try to leave their kids out of it send them to public schools where teachers with purple hair and nose piercings are doing it.

Speaking of anxiety, here’s the paper French works for today:
