LA Times: Affluent white drivers are polluting the air breathed by people of color

We wondered where the Los Angeles Times got the idea to publish such a stupid article: did they get a press release from some far-left activist group? It turns out in this case that the story came from a new study by researchers at the University of Southern California … who then sent out a press release announcing their findings. The LA Times took the bait, and here we are:

Sammy Roth reports:

How is that possible? I asked the study’s lead author, Geoff Boeing, a professor at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.

He told me it largely comes down to the shameful history of Los Angeles County’s low-income communities of color being torn apart to make way for freeways — a history that has been extensively documented by The Times. Today, many residents of the county’s whiter, more affluent neighborhoods — who were often able to keep highways out of their own backyards — commute to work through lower-income Black and Latino neighborhoods bisected by the 10, 110 and 105 freeways and more.

What are the solutions? Well, buying more electric cars, of course, and investing in public transportation.

Suburbs are bad, commuting is bad … everyone should live in an urban apartment located close enough so they can ride a bike to get everything they need.

If Los Angeles is majority Hispanic, aren’t Hispanics also contributing to the air pollution, or do they not drive? Somehow the authors of the study managed to determine what exhaust came from cars driven by white people.
