President Biden's comments on lynchings remind us why universities banned the word 'picnic'

As Twitchy reported Friday, President Joe Biden made some curious comments on lynchings, saying that “some” white families still want to gather at the site of lynchings to “celebrate the spectacle” and take pictures of the hanged bodies. Biden made the remarks Wednesday while introducing a screening of the film “Till,” based on the killing of Emmett Till.

On Saturday, Byron York shared a screenshot from the transcript of the speech, which is forever preserved on the White House website.

Biden said:

Their crimes? Trying to vote. Trying to go to school. Trying to own a business. Trying to re- — preach the gospel. False — false accusations of murder, arson, robbery. Lynched for simply being Black, nothing more. With white crowds, white families gathered to celebrate the spectacle, taking pictures of the bodies and mailing them as postcards.

Hard to believe, but that’s what was done. And some people still want to do that.

Oh, and Biden also recalled again how he “got involved in the civil rights movement as a public defender, as my colleagues know, when I was a kid getting out of law school.” Yes, we’ve all heard how Biden went to mass every morning and then headed over to a black church as part of his work as a civil rights activist.

Biden’s remarks about sending postcards of lynchings (“Wish you were here!”) reminded us of why the word “picnic” was listed among Brandeis University’s list of oppressive language, which a better selection being “outdoor eating”:

The term picnic is often associated with lynchings of Black people in the United States, during which white spectators were said to have watched while eating, referring to them as picnics or other terms involving racial slurs against Black people.

Even Reuters called B.S. on that one:

So whites didn’t have picnics at lynchings, but they did take pictures and mail them as postcards … and some people still want to do that.

There certainly are, and they’re hoping desperately that the 2024 nominee will be someone like Gavin Newsom.
