Former Florida lawmaker says Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to punish teachers' unions for challenging him

“History-making former Florida lawmaker” Carlos Guillermo Smith has just given us more reasons to love Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Remember when Disney decided to enter the fray and come out against the Parental Rights in Education bill under pressure from LGBTQ employees? Soon after, Florida state legislators held meetings discussing the repeal of the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which essentially allowed the Disney theme park to act as its own government. Having beat Disney’s challenge, Charles C. W. Cooke said there was “no need for them to salt the earth.”

That repeal was looked at as revenge against Disney, and now, according to Smith, DeSantis is seeking revenge against teachers’ unions, punishing them for challenging him:

That sounds like a great plan. The Tampa Bay Times reports:

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signaled that he will make a priority of passing a long-debated proposal that would prevent teachers from having union dues deducted from their paychecks.

DeSantis supported the proposal Monday during a speech in Orlando, describing it as “paycheck protection legislation.” The Florida Education Association and other teachers unions backed DeSantis’ Democratic challenger, Charlie Crist, in the Nov. 8 election, with Miami-Dade County teachers union leader Karla Hernandez serving as Crist’s running mate.

DeSantis has battled unions in recent years over issues such as reopening schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. During what was described as a “Freedom Blueprint” speech Monday, he tied the union dues idea to raising pay for teachers during the 2023 legislative session.

Again, it sounds like a great plan. We fail to see the problem.

Really, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Hopefully, it will inspire other governors.
