Spot the difference in USA Today's coverage of the Darrell Brooks and Kyle Rittenhouse trials

It’s not getting any media attention, but we’ve done a couple of posts on the trial of Darrell Brooks, who (allegedly) plowed an SUV into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, killing six and wounding more than 60 more. Brooks has chosen to represent himself in court and objects to the proceedings often; when the judge referred to him as a person, he objected and declared, “I’m not a person, I’m a human being.” He asks witnesses to whom they’re referring when they say “Mr. Brooks.” This is pretty typical:

It took a month for the White House to send the B-team — Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff — to Waukesha, where Biden visited a hospital to talk about the importance of getting vaccinated. The president himself rushed to Buffalo after a mass shooting there, which The Daily Beast blamed in part on “the right-wing freakout” over the Waukesha massacre.

This is gold; check out USA Today’s coverage of the Brooks trial vs. an opinion piece on the Kyle Rittenhouse trial:

Brooks:

Brooks was visibly emotional as he talked about the impact to the families of the victims, the community of Waukesha and his own family. He removed his face mask he has donned for most of the trial so the jury could “see me for who I am, no mask.” “There’s always two sides to every story,” he said. “There’s only been one side told to this story.”

Rittenhouse:

Kyle Rittenhouse’s crocodile tears broke the internet Wednesday. In a nauseatingly melodramatic performance he choked back snot as he appeared to sob about how he feared for his life the day he shot and killed two people at a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Never mind that Rittenhouse was not guilty and Brooks most certainly is.

We’re awaiting the opinion piece on Brooks and how obviously guilty he is of slaughtering six people.
