Slate isn’t saying there is a deep state. Well, actually, it kind of is, but only if by “deep state” you mean “bureaucrats trying to uphold decency and the rule of law.” Look, they’ve even got Alexander Vindman and Fiona Hill in their photo header. But the whole piece was really inspired by the publishing of former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch’s memoir, “Lessons from the Edge.” So it’s a book review.

So, the deep state is good now, even with President Joe Biden in the White House? No, that’s not exactly what they’re saying. They’re just saying it’s a good thing the deep state was around when Donald Trump was president.
