We’ve been hearing a lot about Sen. Mitt Romney recently. Reason’s Robby Soave published a piece arguing that it’s “pretty obvious” that the Republican with the best chance of beating Joe Biden in 2024 is Romney, who’d attract independents and even some fed-up Democrats. And Romney made news over the weekend by calling out Tulsi Gabbard and her “treasonous” lies about U.S.-funded biolabs in Ukraine.
In our minds, Romney will always be the guy who voted to convict President Donald Trump during the Democrats’ second impeachment attempt, giving Democrats the talking point that it was a “bipartisan” effort.
Now we’re learning from CNN that some of the most influential people in the Republican establishment are gathering Monday night for a fundraiser for Rep. Liz Cheney, who’s most famous now for serving on the January 6 select committee. Among those attending is Romney.
Some of the most influential orbits in the Republican establishment are gathering tonight to support @Liz_Cheney. Senator Romney and his longtime allies, Bush World, etc. https://t.co/4mBqdi6tIe

Of course, the media isn’t framing this as Cheney vs. her primary challenger; it’s Cheney vs. Trump, who’s endorsed her primary challenger. CNN reports:
Bobbie and Bill Kilberg were expecting a few dozen people for their fundraiser Monday for GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, an intimate cocktail party they were planning at their home in McLean, Virginia.
But in the weeks since the Republican National Committee voted to censure Cheney for her involvement in the ongoing House select committee investigation of the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, the couple was flooded with requests to come and meet the congresswoman and the event’s special guest, Utah GOP Sen. Mitt Romney.
…
The donor interest isn’t all for Cheney’s reelection bid for her House seat in Wyoming. More than two full years before the 2024 election, Cheney is emerging as the anti-Trump champion, and plenty of Republicans are glad to see it.

So Romney’s the special guest? Then who are these other most influential establishment Republicans?

Here’s more of the guest list:
Among the others on the fundraiser’s invitation are several luminaries of the pre-Trump GOP and veterans of past Republican administrations, including Cheney’s parents, former Vice President Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney, and her sister, Mary, and Mary’s wife, Heather.
Also expected to attend are former Oklahoma Sen. Don Nickles, former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, former Dick Cheney aide Scooter Libby, former presidential candidate and ex-Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina, former Solicitor General Ted Olson, conservative lawyer Miguel Estrada and former Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who served under Romney when he was governor of the Bay State.

Money to support her is money down the toilet

This is just getting silly. She'll never be elected to Congress again let alone President.

So influential they couldn't get their favored flavor nominated that last two presidential election cycles? LOL

The headline on CNN’s website sums it up: “Republican donors line up behind Liz Cheney as she takes on Trump” — as if Trump were running for her seat.
