Dr. Zeke Emanuel joined MSNBC’s Kristen Welker after Pfizer submitted to the FDA its request for an emergency use authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6 months to 5 years. They discussed a poll showing that parents were reluctant to vaccinate their young children, but Emanuel said that vaccinating kids 5 and up seemed like a no-brainer — “I’m confused about parents’ attitude,” he said, noting that “with the omicron variant, kids are either going to get the vaccine or they’re likely to get a serious condition of omicron.”

Just how serious of a condition are we talking?
Retract this now.

Omg. How could you publish something this demonstrably false?

This isn’t remotely true. Yes, Covid can cause serious illness in children. But it’s extremely uncommon (rare, even?). To present this as either get them vaccinated or they’ll end up with a “serious condition” is mind boggling bad. No wonder parents are terrified. https://t.co/qfdsuWwasN

This is absolute misinformation. @MSNBC should pull this tweet down…and fact check Emanuel, who is simple wrong.
Omicron is more transmissable. Kids are getting it at high rates. But the VAST majority (over 99.5%) recover without any problem.

@ZekeEmanuel could you please enumerate the “serious condition[s] of omicron” that children are likely to get? Also, can you provide statistical probability for these?
— The MacDonough Admìnistration (@4thegoodofwhom) February 4, 2022
Vaccinate your 5-year-old or they’ll get a “serious condition” of omicron.
