'Problematic' statue of Teddy Roosevelt removed from Museum of Natural History in New York City

The summer of 2020 wasn’t just about riots — it was the height of statue frenzy as well. President Trump authorized the arrest of rioters who were attempting to topple the statue of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park. And young white liberals argued with black men who did not want the Emancipation Memorial in D.C. torn down. It was problematic, you see, because the statue of Abraham Lincoln helping lift a slave out of his chains looked racist to some people. Boston removed its Emancipation Memorial last December because it was making residents and visitors “uncomfortable” all of a sudden.

There was a similarly problematic statue of Teddy Roosevelt in front of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It showed Roosevelt on a horse with a black man and a Native American walking alongside. Equity would demand that they all have horses. But it’s no longer New York’s problem, as it’s being packed up and shipped to North Dakota where it will be displayed at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

Fact-check: True.

New York already has a George Floyd statue, so we’re not sure what they have planned to fill up the space there.
