If there’s any frequent flier who should be shamed it should be climate czar John Kerry, but we doubt that’s who The Nation had in mind when it concluded that frequent fliers should be shamed. No, it’s your everyday American tourist who flies “on a whim” and whose climate footprint was shrunk by the coronavirus lockdown.
Pre-pandemic travel habits were destroying the earth. They must never be allowed to return.

There’s a difference between shaming and not allowing; or, at least there is in our minds. Rafia Zakaria writes:
One way to prevent this is to stigmatize needless air travel. Several climate activists, including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, have decided to forgo flying as a selfish activity that worsens the very crisis they’re trying to avert. In Sweden, the hypocrisy of traveling frequently by air while also claiming to care about the planet has birthed the flygskam (flight shame) movement, which uses peer pressure to embarrass those who gratuitously board planes.
America needs its own flight shame movement. A recent survey shows that 88 percent of Americans intend to travel in the next six months.
We love you Sweden, but you can keep Greta Thunberg and flygskam.
"Allowed"

The “allowed” part is telling. How very authoritarian.

Ah, so instead of changing our infrastructure and tech you want to control individual behavior and rights. I see how it is The Nation, very authoritarian of you.

Are the owners, publishers, writers, and editors of The Nation exempt from this policy, similar to mask mandates and Hollywood?

You mean like the people who fly private jets just to be at Obama's birthday party?
— Dr. Alice Truth (@AliceWatch) September 21, 2021
I will only entertain this idea if Leonardo Dicaprio flies his private jet to my house and lectures me personally.

"Greta Thunberg, have decided to forgo flying as a selfish activity that worsens the very crisis they’re trying to avert." – You left out the part where she traveled on a billionaire's mega-yacht instead.
— King Explosion Murder (@GenghisKhet) September 21, 2021
Yes comrade! In the sustainable future we're building, only the party elites and economic migrants will be allowed access to global travel. This policy will help in the fight against climate change and racism, somehow.
— MoGibbz (@GibbzMo) September 21, 2021
Have the writers ever considered how idiocy like this impacts small island developing states, SIDS, whose GDP and survival is intrinsically linked to the global tourist trade? I'm thinking not. Just more first world-focused journalism completely devoid of our perspective.

I identify as John Kerry travelling to a climate change speech. So suck it.
— Trev US Ambassador to Wisconsin (@2_the_Republic) September 21, 2021
As long as you don't interfere with John Kerry flying on the Heinz jet to Switzerland or Martha's Vineyard for "cimate" meetings, sure go ahead and discuss.
— Naturally Immune Alex (@rightinca) September 21, 2021
Tell it to the global warming propagandist politicians who all flew in their country’s soot puking jets to NYC to complain about global warming.
Don’t forget, it’s multiple planes per country.

So, what’s this about “pre-pandemic travel habits must never be allowed to return”? We guess flight shaming is going to do it: “Saving the planet requires that we stop gaping and gawking at travel blogs and vacation selfies. Instead, everyone who cares about the environment should shame those who clamber onto an airplane every chance they get.”
OK, so we should hang out at airports and harass people?
