As Twitchy reported earlier, NARAL came to the aid of Congress-birthing-person Cori Bush, explaining that using inclusive language like “birthing persons” and “pregnant people” recognizes that it’s not just cis-gender women that can get pregnant and give birth. (Remember when Speaker Nancy Pelosi made up a whole bunch of new house rules against using gender-specific language like “mother” and “sister” and then immediately broke them?)
Rep. Ayanna Pressley announced Thursday that she and Sen. Cory Booker were re-introducing legislation to help birthing people, but for some reason, they’ve decided to call it the MOMMIES Act.
TODAY: @SenBooker and I re-introduced the MOMMIES Act to expand Medicaid coverage for birthing people & promote community-based, holistic approaches to maternity care.
Every pregnant person should be listened to and treated with dignity and respect during and after childbirth.

Raise your hand, pregnant people, if you want community-based, holistic approaches to maternity care from the federal government.
If the Act is called "MOMMIES", why refer to them as "birthing people" in the language *about* the Act?
— Torr Leonard (@torrHL) May 6, 2021
It makes no sense at all
— Laura (@piedramama) May 6, 2021
Why didn’t you call it the Birthing People Act?
— judypancoast (@judypancoast) May 6, 2021
MOMMIES Act
vs.
"Birthing people"
"pregnant person"Ummm….cognitive dissonance much?

MOMMIES ACT, maternity care and still call it birthing people.

Sorry Congresswoman, "MOMMIES" and "maternity" are not inclusive language!
— Almaqah (@_Almaqah) May 6, 2021
We hate to be the ones to break it to her, but the Act is chock-full of gendered language, e.g., “The term ‘eligible individual’ means a pregnant woman or a formerly pregnant woman during the 365-day period beginning on the last day of her pregnancy.”
I really don't mind the inclusive language in this tweet, but I was just wondering: Why say "birthing people" here on Twitter when the bill says "mothers", the 2nd "m" in MOMMIES stands for "Moms", and the bill refers to women instead of birthing people? Genuinely curious

Love how they go with "birthing people" and "pregnant persons" but then just call it the MOMMIES Act. https://t.co/OIvNXqHNcX

If the term "pregnant women" is now exclusive/offensive, how can you name the legislation "Mommies Act"? Shouldn't it be "Pregnant Persons Act"?

The act is called MOMMIES… you kinda already blew the gender neutral part
— Daniel Rosetti 🇧🇴🇺🇸 (@DanielRosetti4) May 6, 2021
Is it the MOMMIES Act or the Birthing People's Act?
And why did you use the phrase "maternity care?!" I feel microaggressed. Your tweet is violence.
— Rosco Roberts (@RoscoRoberts1) May 6, 2021
And maternity care instead of birthing persons care.
— Eric Goy (@rhit87) May 6, 2021
Shouldn’t it be “personity,” not maternity? Your language is still exclusive and offensive.
— Steven 🇺🇸🇮🇹🇻🇦 (@SFlipp) May 6, 2021
You mean mothers. How are y’all going to alter womanhood and motherhood and then name it MOMMIES Act?
— Wizard Jelly (@DopeA19) May 6, 2021
You wanna try squeezing a clever acronym into "birthing people", be my guest.
— Simplicio (@simplicio823) May 6, 2021
Had to look up the bill's title to see how much they tortured the language to get the right acronym. "Maximizing Outcomes for Moms…"
— ensuingdebacle (@ensuingdebacle) May 6, 2021
“Maximizing Outcomes for Moms through Medicaid Improvement and Enhancement of Services,” aka MOMMIES.
Let’s see Cory Booker give birth.
— KEYROCK, Unfrozen (@Next__Pope) May 6, 2021
Let’s not see that, ’cause he’ll try just to prove men can.
