J.K. Rowling's reps turn down GLAAD's offer to facilitate a discussion with members of the trans community

As Twitchy reported, “Star Wars” actor Mark Hamill apologized for liking a tweet by “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, using the excuse that he didn’t realize the hashtag #IStandWithMaya “had any transphobic connotation.”

The hashtag #IStandWithMaya is used in support of Maya Forstater, who lost her job in the U.K. because of “transphobic” tweets arguing that there are two sexes and “men cannot change into women.” A judge upheld her firing. Here again is the tweet that allegedly ruined the legacy of “Harry Potter” for millions.

Variety’s Adam B. Vary, who recently tipped us off to the two seconds of queer representation in “The Rise of Skywalker,” writes that GLAAD reached out to Rowling’s PR team to set up a discussion with members of the trans community. Rowling’s reps turned down the offer.

Vary writes:

J.K. Rowling’s support of U.K. researcher Maya Forstater — who was fired for anti-trans tweets — “puts trans people at risk,” says Anthony Ramos, head of talent at LGBTQ rights organization GLAAD.

“J.K. Rowling, whose books gave kids hope that they could work together to create a better world, has now aligned herself with an anti-science ideology that denies the basic humanity of people who are transgender,” says Ramos in a statement. “Trans men, trans women and non-binary people are not a threat, and to imply otherwise puts trans people at risk. Now is the time for allies who know and support trans people to speak up and support their fundamental right to be treated equally and fairly.”

Maybe it was just us, but we interpreted #IStandWithMaya as being more of a pro-free speech hashtag than an “anti-science” hashtag putting transgender people at risk.
