We’ve already had some fun with Beto O’Rourke since he dropped out of the presidential race Friday; his supporters are very emotionally vulnerable right now, the sheets of Beto cheers are going into the recycling bin, and people are furious at how badly he was mocked by the media.
Tim Miller, Jeb! alum and Bulwark contributor, knows what it’s like to work for a losing candidate and is annoyed at how the Twitter pundits are piling on poor Beto. We’d stop if we could, but for now, mocking Mr. “Hell Yes, I’m Taking Your AR-15” just feels so right.
As somebody whose been on my share of losing presidentials, I’d just like to say it’s really annoying how many twitter pundits use days like this to just gratuitously mock the loser. It’s hard, people put an insane amount of work into it, no need to be a dick, they know they lost

We had to put up with them, they have to put up with us.

Well stated.
Wow, Romney had to wait 5 years for strange new respect. The Furry gets backslaps same day.
— Lucky Peter (@spongeworthy2) November 2, 2019
He had no business being in a presidential race to begin with.
— Chewiechipsahoy (@Crapplefratz) November 2, 2019
So sorry if I missed the chance to mock you for being on your share of losing presidentials.
— Anthony Bialy (@AnthonyBialy) November 2, 2019
On the other hand he's falling upward into an enormously wealthy private life so screw him?

They NEVER stop trying to take our freedoms away. THEY are the ones being dicks to America; working hard at it doesn't make them heroes.

did you not see how much people mocked Robert Francis BEFORE he dropped out? (well, before, that is, we all forgot he was running. I mean, I thought he had just faded away a month ago. imagine my surprise yesterday!!)

rebuttal: this is an important ritual to discourage vanity campaigns

Just because Beto quit doesn't mean we're going to quit mocking him. Try again.
— Charles DeGlopper (@bronzebarbarian) November 2, 2019
Anyone with a large enough ego to think they deserve to control other's lives deserves all the mockery and derision they get
— Flavs (@flavagoodtime) November 2, 2019
They know they lost, but do they know they’re a furry?
— Andrew S. (@shoutingboy) November 2, 2019
He didn't lose. Not a single vote has been cast in a primary. He didn't like his chances and he quit. Tough.

It’s Twitter, bro. The only thing that makes us feel alive is the pain of others.

The flailing last weeks of his campaign are absolutely worthy of mockery.
— CORDENTHUSIAST (@cordenthusiast) November 1, 2019
He should at least get a trophy for trying! ??
— Abu2FILE (@Abu2File) November 2, 2019
Beto deserves all the ridicule plus some
— Matt (@msuhajda) November 2, 2019
Most of us aren’t mocking Beto for losing. His dropping out was just a reminder to mock him for being Beto.
— This Charmless Man (@Jhimmibhob) November 2, 2019
He knew he didn’t really have a shot in hell but he still took people’s hard earned money. For that and his complete lack of substance, yeah, he should be ridiculed. Should also give the money back out of his own pocket.
— All of Us United (@bikes_r_fun) November 2, 2019
I'm torn between "cry harder, lib" and "this is a land of wolves now."
People who signed on to Beto's team knew what they were doing. The pros got paid and the non-pros wanted Beto.
There's rarely a good time to "be a dick" but laughing at elites who deservedly lose might be one— HoodlumDoodlum (@HoodlumDoodlum) November 1, 2019
Nah, anyone who actually thought Beto was a serious candidate needs mocked…..including Francis.
— Polybius Champion?? (@PolybiusChamp) November 2, 2019
My dickness is directly proportional to the dickness of the candidate in question. That asshole ain’t taking any ARs, is he?
Additionally, screw everyone who supported that.— Joe (B) [for turkey Bird] (@Josef_Lemonovic) November 2, 2019
Like, if you’re not prepared to be relentlessly mocked on Twitter, choose a different field.

What people are laughing at is the hubris that these people thought they were qualified and there was a demand for their viewpoint

My only regret is not mocking Beto more while I had the chance

I'm sorry this is happening to you

TRUE CONSERVATISM (TM): Don’t be joyous in victory over a malignant furry who wants to tax your church into oblivion if you won’t conform to heresy and to send armed men to your home to disarm and arrest you for exercising your constitutional rights.
