As Twitchy reported Friday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sent out a tweet arguing for Washington, D.C. statehood that was more morally right than factually correct, as she tends to be. According to AOC, D.C. was the first “territory” to free the slaves.
She soon tweeted that “the right is pushing back on this,” saying that “certain localities and municipalities did pursue abolition earlier, but none were federally recognized.”
As an example, we’ll defer to Charles C. W. Cooke as one of those on the right pushing back on AOC’s tweet:
I'm genuinely interested to know what AOC means by this. The first sovereign entity to ban slavery in America was Vermont in 1777. The first state was Pennsylvania in 1780. Is this one of those technical arguments revolving around the word "territory"? https://t.co/VPF6gIS6rS

Fortunately, Ocasio-Cortez had The Wall Street Journal’s Byron Tau to “mansplain” her tweet.
I think she means during the Civil War, which I believe is mostly accurate. Emancipation in DC came before the emancipation proclamation, which itself left slavery in place in the border states.https://t.co/LrY91kmG6H

She was wrong, just admit it and move on.

Vermont still abolished slavery before DC
— Vareck The Sarcastic Jew (@BornGerman) September 21, 2019
I think she means, "well, you know what I mean"

Bro.

Lol. Bro, take the L. If she’s the “big girl” she thinks she is, you don’t need to make up excuses for her.

Reality: her press staffer isn’t that well-informed, wrote an ignorant tweet, then needed some kind of ass-pull to save face for the account.
More importantly, why do we all continue participate in this delusion that politicians author their own tweets?
— JoggingWithBurritos (@JoggingBurrito) September 21, 2019
Because we can’t picture Ocasio-Cortez doing much else than tweeting.
Who knows what she means. She probably doesn’t know either.

Not what she said. Good try at white knighting though.

Maybe she will like your tweet, fanboy?
— jennydee (@jenndee19) September 21, 2019
She's still not gonna date you, bro.

I think maybe she’s old enough to not need help explaining herself.
— Au H2O Repub (Tater) (@TeeKayTex) September 21, 2019
No, Byron.
She got it wrong.

“Mostly accurate”

Defending her ignorance of history is not a good look…
— Jorj X McKie (@jjs92285) September 21, 2019
No, she was wrong.
And, now, so are you.
— Robin Josephette Biden II (@RobinJosephette) September 22, 2019
So if you twist it, it’s kinda right?
— Kevin Soon (@kmwsoon) September 20, 2019
No. Just no. Why are you carrying water for her? Ideology? Your job should preclude that
— BD (@BDiddyNoVA) September 22, 2019
So great of you to give her so much credit, can't wait for you to do that to anyone other than the Democrats you work for
— FreeTin (@Cylina) September 22, 2019
Maybe you could print out a flow chart or definition sheet to let us all know what she actually means everytime she says something that is totally false.
— Fraunkenstine (@ristine_kevin) September 21, 2019
Dude. You're gonna dislocate your shoulder reaching that hard.
