As Twitchy recently reported, the Washington Post published a piece blaming “white nostalgia” for the supposed outrage around the casting of a black actor to play Ariel in the live-action adaptation of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”
We say “supposed,” because BuzzFeed’s Brandon Wall took a closer look at the tweet cited as proof of white people being upset; the account’s avatar was stolen from an Instagram model, and even the photo of the DVD box was ripped from another source. In short, it couldn’t have been any faker.
Just like we were told we had to see the all-female “Ghostbusters” to prove we weren’t sexist, now we’re getting the story that “misogynists” are upset that a woman has been cast in the lead in the next “Terminator” film.
Tim Miller Has A Message For Misogynists That Aren’t Happy With Mackenzie Davis In ‘Terminator 6’: “I Don’t Give A F–k” https://t.co/1TyKt0z4bB pic.twitter.com/idzCKbitFc

Here’s director Tim Miller’s message for the misogynists who are unhappy — of whom not one single example is given, not one tweet cited:
“If you’re at all enlightened, she’ll play like gangbusters,” said the director. “If you’re a closet misogynist, she’ll scare the f**k out of you, because she’s tough and strong but very feminine. We did not trade certain gender traits for others; she’s just very strong, and that frightens some dudes. You can see online the responses to some of the early s**t that’s out there, trolls on the internet. I don’t give a f**k.”
No, we can’t see the responses online. Show us one.
At this point this is marketing PR ploy on behalf of these guys and nothing more. Maybe they’ll figure out this isn’t the way to get people in the theatre when this one bombs. https://t.co/hT7ne05DCz

Because fans of the Terminator series hate strong women.
— BT (@back_ttys) July 10, 2019
you mean the series that literally has a female protagonist and literally has already had a female terminator https://t.co/uwfee6CSSK
— Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) July 10, 2019
No offense, but: color me EXCEPTIONALLY SKEPTICAL that “misogynists” are up in arms about women in a new Terminator movie.
— Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) July 10, 2019
I DON’T MEAN TO BE A CYNIC but it seems to me that maybe they’re pushing this “misogynists don’t like this unnecessary sequel!” angle in order to generate credulous headlines and drive good will. I dunno, it’s possible.

Here we go again. https://t.co/qLpfitaRHM

Has there ever been a misogyny panic surrounding a movie that was actually good, or is it just a marketing ploy by people who know their movie is going to bomb?
— neontaster (@neontaster) July 10, 2019
In fairness to Tim Miller, maybe Terminator fans aren't ready for a feminine-yet-badass Terminator… pic.twitter.com/zJ6fwwoey6

No doubt. pic.twitter.com/YXBHlhpr2h

Next thing you know, they'll put one in an Alien movie. smh
— Gerry Daly (@GerryDales) July 10, 2019
I can't believe they put a woman in a Terminator movie pic.twitter.com/kF7A4qfexN

Woke Hollywood treating Linda Hamilton like: pic.twitter.com/otxNDSvsbM
— Ben Crystal & The Last Stop on the Right Dancers (@LastStopOTR) July 10, 2019
So Tim Miller is completely unfamiliar with the entire franchise? Good to know.
— Physics Geek (@physicsgeek) July 10, 2019
Just so you know, Hollywood, this is why we all rolled our eyes when you said “Captain Marvel” was special because it starred a woman as a superhero (so did “Wonder Woman,” duh), and that’s why there was even a GoFundMe to send little girls to see it to inspire them. It wasn’t marketing hype at all.
Where are these complaints? I have seen ZERO.
— Mister Majestic | Gigantic Guyver | Pickle Rick (@AntonioB79) July 10, 2019
Are people actually talking about this movie? This seems very manufactured.
— Mr. Bat-man ?? (@KnightWing19) July 10, 2019
The first I'm hearing about this movie's existence is the creator trying to start a fight over misogynists hating it…
Yea, I think it's safe for me to pass on this one.
— Daniel Whiteman (@giantevilrobotg) July 10, 2019
Christ… The marketers do realize that The Terminator franchise has pretty much been anchored by a lead female character, right? No one cares at this point.
— Bill Lehecka (@billlehecka) July 10, 2019
Sarah Connor reloaded a shotgun with one arm. Nothing less will impress.
— Betty Bookworm ??? (@betty_penate) July 10, 2019
Maybe the “take THAT, theoretical trolls!” style of viral marketing will become more recognizable if it’s this cynical? Could be wishful thinking
— Rational Thinker 69 (@Rationalist69) July 10, 2019
Is it just me, or is this advertising strategy getting tiresome? https://t.co/LV0oEhb7ts
— Steven Crowder (@scrowder) July 10, 2019
I would bet a shiny quarter that this is completely fake and it's not even faked well. Sarah Connor (female) has been a central part of the Terminator story since the very beginning, and SUDDENLY people are outraged by this concept? Bullshit.
— Chris Alexander (@cmalex79) July 10, 2019
Can confirm from many people I know in PR that it's about 90% manufactured, 10% real
— joey aulisio (@joey_aulisio) July 10, 2019
These faux controversy, strawman-bashing headlines are formulaic and increasingly annoying
— Joshua Byrd (@CaviarEmptier) July 10, 2019
Hello Ghostbusters.
— Saint Swav✘ NMH3?™ (@SuaveVillain) July 10, 2019
You know what this tells me? That this movie is going to suck, the makers know it's going to suck, and they're already mounting the Ghostbusters 2016 defense. https://t.co/chc6U3ql6q
— Brandon Morse (@TheBrandonMorse) July 10, 2019
I'm just glad we're finally, for the first time ever, going to have a movie with a strong female lead.
— Dennis Zickefoose (@dzchan) July 10, 2019
Finally.
