We’ve already covered today’s Senate vote on Sen. Ben Sasse’s Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act quite a bit, but it feels like we can’t say enough about it. The term “gaslighting” is overused on social media, but in this case, it’s absolutely true: organizations like NARAL are trying to make the American public believe that the act was going to limit access to abortion or health care.
This is from Sasse himself, and it covers in its entirety the reach of the legislation, inspired by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s public endorsement of infanticide:
Sasse’s legislation simply requires that, when a botched abortion results in the live birth of an infant, health care practitioners must exercise the same degree of professional skill and care to protect the newborn as would be offered to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.
Currently, federal law does not adequately protect a born child who survives an abortion. On January 22, 2019, New York repealed protections (section 4164 of the state’s public health law) for an infant born alive during an abortion.
That’s it: if a child survives an abortion, it should be given medical care just like any other baby. What’s the alternative? Leave it unattended to die.
We did a post on Vox journalist Aaron Rupar just a little bit ago, calling him out for this tweet, which is still up:
CNN's new political editor pushed conspiracy theories about Planned Parenthood that were based on misleadingly edited videos https://t.co/aAugMf5XaL
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 19, 2019
Those undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood executives haggling over the price of baby parts were posted in their entirety by the Center for Medical Progress and were not edited, misleadingly or otherwise; if you don’t believe us, believe the 5th Circuit Court and the team that did a forensic examination of the videos and determined they were authentic.
And now here’s reproductive rights expert Rupar on today’s Senate vote, reacting to President Trump’s tweets:
Senate Democrats just voted against legislation to prevent the killing of newborn infant children. The Democrat position on abortion is now so extreme that they don’t mind executing babies AFTER birth….
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 26, 2019
….This will be remembered as one of the most shocking votes in the history of Congress. If there is one thing we should all agree on, it’s protecting the lives of innocent babies.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 26, 2019
This is a heinous and dangerous lie. Killing children is illegal. Period. https://t.co/2o7nXioMKP
— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) February 26, 2019
How is it a lie, let alone a heinous and dangerous lie? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo just lit up One World Trade Center in pink to celebrate the passage of legislation that allowed abortions up to birth and provided no protection for babies born alive after botched abortions. Sasse’s bill would have granted that protection in the form of medical attention.
It’s a rare occurrence but that Trump tweet is accurate. https://t.co/efrb9CAfm5

You have to stop lying. You lied about this already. If a baby is born by a botched abortion, what is your plan?

Check out this hero:
I have reported trump's tweet. This is so evil and disgusting and such a lie it could create violence to the lives of women.

Leaving newborns on a table to die is OK, but Trump’s tweet could create violence against women. Got it. Keep those eyes shut tight and your fingers in your ears.
