The New York Times makes a great argument that the federal government is way too big

The New York Times thought the size of the government shutdown might be easier to convey to its readers if it could compare the number of people furloughed to some large, private corporations. Just how many people are we talking about here?

So in a limited government shutdown, more that twice the number of people who work for Target nationwide are either furloughed or working for a deferred paycheck? That’s a lot of people — and we hadn’t even noticed.

And 16 times the size of the entire coal industry? We’re old enough to remember when President Obama said he was going to bankrupt the coal industry, and also when candidate Hillary Clinton said she was going to “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” We don’t remember much of a fuss from the New York Times, though.
