The New York Times thought the size of the government shutdown might be easier to convey to its readers if it could compare the number of people furloughed to some large, private corporations. Just how many people are we talking about here?
800,000 federal employees are furloughed or working without pay during the shutdown. That is more than double the number of people who work for Target, and 16 times the size of the entire coal mining industry. https://t.co/LUhfe0odC1

So in a limited government shutdown, more that twice the number of people who work for Target nationwide are either furloughed or working for a deferred paycheck? That’s a lot of people — and we hadn’t even noticed.
This speaks volumes, and probably not in the way the NY Times intended. https://t.co/JRwICjklrS

And 16 times the size of the entire coal industry? We’re old enough to remember when President Obama said he was going to bankrupt the coal industry, and also when candidate Hillary Clinton said she was going to “put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” We don’t remember much of a fuss from the New York Times, though.
So, you’re saying we have WAY too many federal employees?
— coyote_50 (@coyote_50) January 6, 2019
That is a ridiculous amount of non essential employees.

Sounds like we have too many people working for the government

Do we need all those employees and what do they really do ?
— scott juliano (@scottjuliano) January 6, 2019
That's disturbing. Government bureaucracy being one of our nation's biggest industries doesn't seem very healthy or sustainable. We need to find out what all those people do and if we really need them doing it.

Kind of makes you wonder why the US Government has that many employees given that it doesn’t provide nearly that amount of service or value. ? https://t.co/yaWhDr5Rt3

Almost like there’s too many government employees and they need to get real jobs. https://t.co/oxVAEQ5AVv

If these govt employees could hack working private sector, they could find a new job in about 5 mins.

Workers in the private sector are subject to reduced hours, layoffs, and firings with or without gov't shutdowns. https://t.co/2ToBpUlgi6
