Detroit school board member wants Ben Carson's name taken off school

The Detroit News is reporting Wednesday that the Detroit school board has set in motion a process to rename several buildings in the school district, including the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine.

Normally when we do these stories, the schools have names associated with Confederate generals, but at least one board member is pushing to have the Housing and Urban Development secretary’s name removed because he’s associated with the Trump administration:

LaMar Lemmons cited the neurosurgeon’s name being added when the district was under an emergency financial manager, saying some residents objected to Carson representing the city.

Residents “don’t support the (Trump) administration,” he said.

What is this new policy? One criterion for changing a building’s name is if “information newly discovered about the current name of the school is negative in nature.” If that’s not the reason the board is citing, we can’t find the one that applies.
