Church to remove plaque honoring George Washington that made some feel unsafe

Where will the movement to take down Confederate statues end? That has yet to be determined, but we do know now that it’s not only monuments to Confederates that are being targeted — monuments to Christopher Columbus have been defaced and smashed, and a statue of Francis Scott Key in Baltimore was vandalized, apparently because of his “racist anthem.”

Just this week, the Pittsburgh Art Commission unanimously recommended that a statue of songwriter Stephen Foster (“Oh! Susannah,” “Camptown Races”) be removed from public view.

Oh, and Teddy Roosevelt was splashed with “blood.”

Is George Washington next? It looks that way, at least at Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia.

Fox News reports:

Leaders at the church that George Washington attended decided that a plaque honoring the first president of the United States must be removed.

Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia will take down a memorial marking the pew where Washington sat with his family, saying it is not acceptable to all worshipers.

“The plaques in our sanctuary make some in our presence feel unsafe or unwelcome,” leaders said, a reference to the fact that Washington was a slaveholder.
