UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praises Fidel Castro as 'a strong voice for social justice'

It all depends on what you’d consider “praise” of Fidel Castro, but there certainly didn’t seem to be any shortage of progressives lauding the deceased Cuban dictator for making great strides for the Cuban people in the fields of education and health.

Anyone who thought that President Obama was too easy on Castro in his official statement noting the “enormous impact of this singular figure” only needed to look to the United Nations for full-blown praise.

That the United Nations bears no resemblance to the world in which the rest of us live is old news, but come on: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday praised Castro for overseeing “advances in the fields of education literacy and health” and being “a strong voice for social justice in global discussions at the UN General Assembly.”

Maybe it’s time for the UN to relocate to Cuba so it can draw inspiration from the Cuban government in its quest for social justice.
